I'm on a mission to find out who coined the phrase "Happy Friday" as it used in San Francisco Bay Area. I wonder if there is any way you can track down these things...I'm thinking there is and Bloggersville is the best place to start. Tell me...where did you first hear "Happy Friday" used as a greeting to friends and co-workers on Fridays?
In 1991 I was working for Osmonics in Minnetonka, Minnesota. It was a Friday and I walked into the office. I looked at my Administrative Assistant, and said to her, "Good Morning, Cathy. Happy Friday!" She looked at me and laughed and said, "Well, Happy Friday to you, too, Jim Gamble." To the best of my knowledge the phrase was coined by me that morning. It spread around the workplace and eventually around the country.
ReplyDeleteYou did not coin this phrase!
DeleteSo here's the story of Happy Friday origin, I've been telling for years to everyone including my family of course whenever the feeling strikes. Not that anybody really believes me but it's a God honest truth... It was early 2000's between 2002-2004, not sure now exactly what year it was but approximately then. I was working at that time at REED Technology and a few ladies including myself were chatting on break sitting around our desks. Someone said about being glad it's Friday and in my head I started getting fleeting thoughts like my grandma Rip used to say it's like a holiday when she was happy about something, so I imagined saying Happy Friday but thought it was weird and English not being my 1st language I was embarrassed to say it out loud but something pushed me to say it anyway. To my surprise no one looked at me weird and didn't say anything back, as they weren't sure what to say never hearing it before. Lol I was glad nobody laughed at me for saying it. The next Friday to my surprise someone repeated the frase, I couldn't believe it they remembered it what seemed weird to me to say at first! So that became the frase every Friday for about a few weeks to follow, didn't think anything of it just something that cought on at work lol. Well, law and behold about a month or so after I'm driving home listening to my favorite radio station and the DJ says Happy Friday everyone! Well I got floored and the rest is history. Later it became Happy everything lol and I only meant it for Friday originally. I don't like to say the frase at all since it became what it is now but once in a while if I like a Facebook post or something with The frase on it, I will always say Happy Friday from the original 😏 This is my story I'm sticking to it as long as I live, believe it or not.
ReplyDeleteTo the person who replied before me about the 90's isn't true, nobody was saying it in the 90's. I know because I was working in the beauty salon at that time and if anything I would've heard it then from my clients and I didn't come with the Happy Friday frase then because I loved that job! Lol
